Behind The Lyrics: Pirates
Hi guys, Eric here. This is another post in our series about the meanings behind our lyrics.
This time, I’m covering ‘Pirates’:
There is no denying that these are the silliest lyrics I’ve ever written for Derelict.
I wrote a bit about the novel “Odinn’s Child” by Tim Severin in my ‘Summoning the Firestorm’ post, and this song was inspired by that book as well. The main character ends up on a Viking expedition to North America around the year 1,000, before it was discovered by the European empires hundreds of years later.
(Interestingly enough, there are further theories that other Europeans had been to America even before the Vikings. Read into that here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Farfarers)
This got me thinking about conquest, exploration, the high seas, and what some groups of humans are willing to do to other groups of humans for personal profit.
Then, when we started working on this song, the main melody just sounded too much like a swashbuckling romp to not write the lyrics about pirates. So, I came up with a historically impossible scenario in which a ship full of pirates (with guns and cannons) find a Viking settlement, and decide to raid it. The Vikings rise to the challenge and overtake the pirates in defense of their homes. Then, seeing this well-armed pirate ship now completely unmanned, they decide to take it for themselves and go off raiding.
I like to tell myself that deep down I was trying to uncover some human nature stuff in there, by pointing out our tendency to exploit an advantage when we can, and bla bla bla, but really it’s just a fun song about an epic battle.
